Not the finest Discworld novel Terry’s ever written, but there’s still a great deal here to enjoy. This affectionate parody of football with the beloved Unseen University wizards is blessed with interesting characters new and familiar, but seems a little trivial in the context of his more recent works. Sadly, unless you have a love of football, this will not be a favourite in anyone’s collection. The plot is not very interesting or impressive, and while the book is amusing there aren’t too many laugh-out-loud moments. Pratchett fans will be largely satisfied with the familiar surroundings, but the book must sadly be relegated to a second division of the Discworld series, lacking as it does the social and character depth of many of the other books. Pratchett’s writing continues to be excellent, but this particular work has a limited appeal. For hardcore fans only, otherwise it can be given a miss.
