Advice

Giving out advice, however good, can be extremely dangerous to one’s health. I guess the reasons for this can be fairly complex; not least because the solutions to many problems are simply a matter of reasoning. Most people can reason; and if they are rejecting reason they are most likely in denial. Thus good advice, even when it is sought, can be most unwelcome; it merely reminds people what they are in denial about; it can reveal our personal flaws; it can open us to a truth we simply do not want to know. The other thing about giving good advice is that it is almost impossible not to be a hypocrite; knowing the right things to do and living them are quite different things. Giving advice is a risky business; and when one does it one risks receiving the ire of the person who needs it. Often, that’s the price of helping someone you might care about.
